There's something distinctly joyful about driving a small, sporty hatchback that delivers terrific performance and features great handling. In a new review of the latest edition of the segment-defining Volkswagen Golf GTI high-performance hatchback, New York Times auto writer Tom Voelk makes note of the Golf GTI's endurance for more than 30 years as the category benchmark.

According the The New York Times' Voelk, the 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI continues to deliver the same spirited fun-loving driving experience for which it has become famous. The GTI is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that feeds on premium fuel and produces 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Voelk recommends jumping from the S version to the Sport edition, with bigger brakes and an adjustable differential that sends full power to either front wheel to mitigate torque steer. Preset driving modes allow you to manage throttle response, exhaust and steering weight depending on the road conditions.

One of the enjoyable aspects of driving the GTI occurs in hard cornering: the little hatchback easily manages turns and corners via highly-effective torque vectoring. Indeed, Voelk points out that Car and Driver reports a 0-60 mph launch time of 6.1 seconds and a .93 lateral G-rating on a skid pad.

Inside, the 2017 GTI is outfitted with everything you need to feel secure and in control. The SE version of the Golf GTI has bolstered and heated leather-upholstered front seats, as well as a crisp infotainment system that plays nice with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
